Alone. That’s what the echo in the valley whispers. Then the Shepherd calls, “There you are.”
Here, I Am.The Walk in the Valley
This is ultimately not a story about surviving the valley. It is a story about discovering that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, was already walking through it before we arrived.
Stories where faith meets medicine, guiding hearts through life’s valleys.
When a serious medical crisis pulled Gary Shayne Huston into the valley of the shadow of death, the Shepherd did not wait at the exit. He was already there — and He brought people with Him. Structured around Psalm 23, The Shepherd Holds traces a journey through diagnosis and uncertainty, told through the faces of the men and women God placed along the path at exactly the right moment. Doctors, strangers, family, friends. Each one sent. None of them accidental.
The Shepherd holds. And He never holds alone.
This Book Was Written for You
If you’re in the valley
If you’re reading these words while walking through a valley, I want you to know something that took me a long time to learn. You do not have to walk it alone. I pray these pages help you see the Shepherd — and perhaps some of the people He has already placed beside you.
— Gary Shayne Huston
If you’re walking beside someone
This book was written for you too — the friend who doesn’t know what to say, the caregiver running on empty, the one wondering if showing up even matters. It does. You may be exactly who they were sent.
What Readers Are Saying
“A winner. I found my own valley reflected in these pages.”
— Roxanna Pernell
“This story allows you to understand the path to placing your faith in the forefront.”
— Don Hermansen
“The beauty of Shayne’s story is his ability to capture the struggle that cancer patients face alongside their families. The story reveals the pain, anguish, and insecurities that become part of the fabric of your life. He is able to balance the fight for life parallel to the absolute fear of death that can consume so many.
This is all best told in a story that captures the reader in a way made possible by the battle he waged, which led to sharing his story and soul, in a mission to provide hope and understanding to cancer patients and their families.
Cancer can terrify the strongest of human souls, it will challenge yourself and your loved ones. This story allows you to understand the path to placing your faith in the forefront.”
— Don Hermansen
